SUMMER BREEZE FEATURES DANNY O’KEEFE AT LIONS PARK SUNDAY, JUNE 3 PDF Print E-mail

Danny O'Keefe
Writing the classic and often recorded Good Time Charlie’s Got the Blues may be what Danny O’Keefe is best known for, but his long and illustrious singer/songwriting career includes much more. O’Keefe will take the Summer Breeze stage on Sunday, June 3, in Lions Park, 400 South Flood, Norman. Bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating, and your favorite refreshments. The free concert begins at 7:30 pm.

O’Keefe has a catalogue of albums, dating back to 1966, that includes a rich vein of country songs. Although his early albums featured steel guitars and fiddles, O’Keefe wasn’t limited to one genre, mixing country with jazz, R& B and rock. “I don’t think marketing guys had a clue as to what to do with me” O’Keefe says.

His musical career began in the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota coffeehouse scene. A chance meeting with Buffalo Springfield’s manager in 1969 led to a telephone audition with the President of Atlantic Records, who immediately signed O’Keefe. Danny O’Keefe’s second album with Atlantic produced the top-ten hit, and now standard, Good Time Charlie’s Got the Blues, a song that has been recorded by Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Leon Russell, Waylon Jennings, Jerry Lee Lewis, Mel Torme, Chet Atkins and many others.

GUITAR LEGEND LEO KOTTKE COMES TO SUMMER BREEZE PDF Print E-mail

Leo Kottke
Acoustic guitarist Leo Kottke, widely known for his idiosyncratic fingerpicking style, and his syncopated, polyphonic melodies, will take the Summer Breeze stage at Norman’s Andrews Park Amphitheater, Sunday, May 20, at 7:30 PM.  Bring your favorite refreshments, and lawn chairs or blankets for seating in grassy areas, to this free concert in the park.

Kottke’s music draws on blues, jazz, and folk music influences.  Focusing primarily on instrumental composition and playing, Kottke has sporadically moved in a vocal direction, singing in an unconventional yet expressive baritone.  In concert, Kottke intersperses humorous and often bizarre monologues with vocal and instrumental selections from throughout his career, played solo on his signature 6- and 12-string guitars.

Widely recognized as a master of the guitar, Leo Kottke has had a long and illustrious career.  As a youth living in Muskogee, Oklahoma, Kottke played trombone and violin before moving to the guitar and developing his own unconventional picking style.  Kottke's tunings are often unconventional as well.  Early in his career he heavily utilized open tunings, while in recent years he has used more traditional voicings but often detunes his guitars as many as two full steps below standard tuning.
