The Performing Arts Studio is pleased to announce the third in a series of free jazz concerts in the Norman Depot, 200 South Jones Avenue.  The Larry Hammett Group will play at 7:30 PM on Sunday, November 4.  Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Director of Guitar Studies at the University of Oklahoma and a recognized expert in both classical and jazz guitar, Hammett is in constant demand in both genre as both performer and accompanist, and one of very few guitarists today leading a successful double life in both classical and jazz guitar.  He has been teaching at the college level since 1982, directing and teaching one of the most successful guitar programs in the country.

Hammett has performed and given master classes in France, Mexico, Argentina, and across the United States.  He is a familiar face in the Norman jazz scene.  As a recording artist for Beat Records, Rome, Italy, and Octo Arts, Quezon City, Philippines, his recordings are aired worldwide and licensed in the United States through Digital Cable Radio, Music Springs, 3M, and AEI.  Releases include: Brazos Island (1992); The Larry Hammett Quartet (1995); and Genie Jones (2001).

Dennis Borycki will join Hammett on keyboard.  They have been described as “magical together.”

Red Velvet Coat - Norma Brown
“Through Three Generations: Paintings and Photographs by Norma, Nathan and Sierra Brown,” will open on Sunday, October 7 with a reception for the artists from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in the Performing Arts Studio Gallery, located in the Norman Depot, 200 South Jones Ave.  Live music will be provided by Dennis Borycki.  Refreshments will be served.  The public is invited.

Although Norma Brown specializes in Impressionistic oils of English gardens and landscapes, traveling often to paint on location in England, Scotland and Israel, she is a versatile painter also comfortable with diverse media, including watercolor, acrylic and charcoal.  “Varying both the subject matter and the media is important to me” Norma says.  “It keeps my work from being static, and I learn something new with each piece.  I have learned to develop themes from the natural or accidental confluence of line and color so that my work has become interpretative rather than photographic in style.” Norma’s hope is that “my work is a contribution to the times; a tract or footprint of individuality which shares a bit of the art spirit with fellow strugglers - artist and non-artist alike.”

As has become tradition, the Byron Berline Band will close the Summer Breeze season with a free concert in Norman’s Andrews Park Amphitheater at 7:30 PM on September 23.  Bring refreshments, perhaps a blanket, and enjoy an evening of lively bluegrass and country swing music!
