The next series of writing classes designed to help senior women document their lives will be offered Thursdays in October at the Performing Arts Studio, located in The Norman Depot. The classes begin October 9 and are open to women age sixty and over. “This is a place where women can write their life story,” said class instructor Dana Loy. “Some have been involved in the group since we started, about two years ago. Each time we begin a new series of classes, we have new participants. Everyone is welcome.” Through the classes, women recall events in their lives, share memories with others in the group, and write them down. At the end of the workshop, each participant takes home her collection of autobiographical writings. “Writings of this type reinforce our sense that our lives matter and that we make a difference in the world,” Loy said. “They pass on the story of who we are as individuals, as families, as communities.” “The hardest part of writing is finding the time,” Loy said. “Through the workshop, we give ourselves time, and in just four weeks we create a beautiful collection of stories. Some are funny, some are historical, and some touch your heart. Each week when we leave the class, I think we all feel like we’ve experienced something important.” Instructor Dana Loy is an experienced teacher of writing who teaches at the University of Oklahoma. The four memoir writing classes will meet on Thursday afternoons from 3:00 to 5:00, October 9 through October 30. The cost for the series is $75. Registration is limited. The deadline for enrolling is Thursday, October 2. To enroll by phone or to request a registration form, contact The Performing Arts Studio at 307-9320.
