The Hosty Duo Norman music sensation The Hosty Duo will bring their unique blend of music and comedy to the Summer Breeze stage on Sunday, August 24th, at 7:30 pm at Lions Park. Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to be donated to Norman’s Food for Friends shelter the night of the free concert. As always, concertgoers are welcome to bring their favorite picnic items and lawn chairs to the concert.Mike Hosty and Mike “Tic Tac” Byars have been playing music together for more than a decade and both are seasoned musicians who have gained the respect of fellow musicians and music lovers across the nation. A casual sampling of their set might lead one to believe that there are at least three players in the band. However, after a closer look at Mike Hosty’s base-playing feet and Mike Byars economical, machine gun like licks on the drums it becomes clear that these two talented musicians are at the top of their game. |

Talk of the Town The Norman Downtowners Association is pleased to present the “Talk of the Town” orchestra as they return by popular demand to entertain at the Friday, August 15, Lunchtime Concert on the lawn of the Norman Depot, 200 South Jones. A light lunch will be served at 11:45, with dessert compliments of Hiland Dairy. The Performing Arts Studio will provide beverages. The music begins at noon. Some chairs will be available for seating, but lawn chairs or blankets are welcome. The concert will be moved inside if the heat is oppressive or should it rain. “Talk of the Town” is a 17 member orchestra formed in 1988 as a volunteer organization to keep alive the Glenn Miller tradition of the golden era of the big bands. With more than a 2,700 tune repertoire of big band arrangements -- swing, jitterbug, ballads, waltzes, polkas, blues, country and western, two-step, patriotic, and gospel styles -- ranging in time through all of the 20th Century, they can play an entire program from a particular era, or a nice selection of music from several eras. “Talk of the Town” has evolved over the years into the premier ballroom dance band in the state and today they play for most of the ballroom dance clubs and organizations in Oklahoma. The September 12 Lunchtime Concert will feature the John Arnold Band, with Norman Convention and Visitors Bureau providing lunch. Lunchtime Concerts are sponsored by the Norman Downtowners Association and produced by the Performing Arts Studio. Coach’s BBQ and Pizza provided complimentary pizza for both the June and July Lunchtime Concerts. They deserve a huge thank you for their generosity and for two delicious lunches! Danny O'Keefe Writing the classic and often recorded ‘Good Time Charlie’s Got the Blues’ may be what Danny O’Keefe is best known for, but his long and illustrious singer-songwriting career includes much more. O’Keefe will take the Summer Breeze stage on Sunday, August 10, in Lions Park, 400 South Flood, Norman. Bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating, and your favorite refreshments. The free concert begins at 7:30 pm.O’Keefe’s musical career began in the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota coffeehouse scene. He has a catalogue of albums dating back to 1966. Although his early albums featured steel guitars and fiddles, O’Keefe wasn’t limited to one genre, mixing country with jazz, R&B and rock. “I don’t think marketing guys had a clue as to what to do with me” O’Keefe says. A chance meeting with Buffalo Springfield’s manager in 1969 led to a telephone audition with the president of Atlantic Records, who immediately signed O’Keefe. His second album with Atlantic produced the top-ten hit, and now standard, ‘Good Time Charlie’s Got the Blues,’ which has since been recorded by Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Leon Russell, Waylon Jennings, Jerry Lee Lewis, Mel Torme, Chet Atkins and a long list of others.

“Antidotes and Home Remedies,” a new poetry book by Jim Chastain, will be launched at the July 13 Second Sunday Poetry Reading in the Norman Depot, 200 South Jones Ave. “The book is a combination of health-related poems and some of my most popular poems from the last few years.” Chastain says. “There will be snacks, music, a little poetry, and lots of fun with friends. Please save the date and make plans to be there!” The free event begins at 2:00 pm. Chastain’s memoir, “I Survived Cancer, but Never Won the Tour de France,” a collection of essays and poems, was published in October of 2006 by HAWK Publishing and was named Top Ten Nonfiction of 2006 by the Austin Chronicle. The book covers Jim's five year battle with cancer and includes “a series of horror stories that will cause you to choke on your doughnut with laughter” Jim says. His first poetry book, “Like Some First Human Being,” was released in late 2006. His many poetry credits include recently published poems in World Literature Today, Oklahoma Today, Blood & Thunder, and The Blue Rock Review. Chastain has been a featured reader at the Oklahoma Festival of the Arts, Full Circle Bookstore, The Benedict Street Market series, Scissortail Creative Writing Festival, and the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival. A sample poem follows: Weird Bird
A weird bird lives inside me and thinks that I'm his tree. He flies around inside my head and whispers stuff to me. But when I tell my buddies these things that I have heard, they tend to give me funny looks and tell me I'm absurd. It doesn't seem to help a bit to give my solemn word and say those thoughts came not from me but from my head's weird bird. Jim Chastain Chastain also writes feature articles for the award-winning magazine Oklahoma Today and for the Oklahoma Gazette alternative weekly and has been a film critic for The Norman Transcript for more than a decade. His film reviews have also appeared in The Edmond Evening Sun, The Enid News and Eagle and The Briefcase. Jim is a founding member of the Oklahoma Film Critic's Circle.
An attorney for the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals, Chastain refers to his job writing opinions for the Court as the "very essence of creative writing." For more information on Jim Chastain, visit www.jimchastain.com. For more information on Performing Arts Studio programs, call 405-307-9320. The Performing Arts Studio is a nonprofit organization located in the Norman Depot with a mission to create and present excellent and innovative fine arts programs for the enrichment and education of our community.
