Jahruba
Jahruba Lambeth is an African born in Oklahoma whose family has been in the Norman area since the land run.  He calls himself a 20th Century Griot -- an African storyteller -- who shares his cultural history through songs and stories handed down by his ancestors.

Jahruba will tell his stories at the Performing Arts Studio, located in the Norman Depot, 200 South Jones, beginning at 1:30 on Saturday, February 16.  Children and adults alike are invited to attend this free event.

Jahruba has been performing professionally for over 35 years.  His approach is to use authentic artifacts, folk-tales, songs and instruments to teach young and old about Africa and the African American experience.

He selects stories that encourage young people to think for themselves -- such as the story of the greedy hunter of Ibo village who found out the hard way about the power of greed, or  Fulumbo of the Fulanis, the handicapped boy who saved his village from Zulu raiders with the magical rhythm of peace.  There are stories of Ananzi the spider, always up to tricks, and many more.

In addition to a BA in African Studies from San Francisco University, Jahruba has studied with master drummers and street musicians from around the world.

Storytelling at the Depot is made possible in part by a grant from the Norman Arts Council.  Jahruba is the fifth in a monthly series.

For additional information phone the Performing Arts Studio at 405-307-9320.  Gallery and office hours are  8:00 am to 3:00 pm Tuesday through Friday and 1:00 to 5:00 on Sunday.

“I have always had an interest in paintings, but never imagined I would paint.” says Holland. “About four years ago I called [sister] Bets and asked: ‘How do you oil paint?’  She laughed and told me get a brush, canvas and some paint – then start.  That’s what I did.”

Holland has not had formal training, other than attending a number of group sessions under Carol Armstrong at the Firehouse Art Center. His painting education has come from books and from looking at thousands of paintings in magazines, galleries and art museums in the cities he visits on business.

Shawnee Poet Jim Spur to Read at Norman Depot Jan. 13 PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 05 January 2008

Jim Spur will be the featured poet at the Performing Arts Studio’s “Second Sunday Poetry” reading on January 13, beginning at 2:00 PM.  This is the Shawnee poet’s second appearance in the PAS poetry series.  Light refreshments will be served.  There is no admission charge.

“Jim has a good sense of humor and a great reading style” says series host Carl Sennhenn.  “His readings are always big audience pleasers.”

Spur has spent most of his life in Shawnee, graduating from college and meeting his wife there.  He became an insurance adjuster in the 60’s and has owned and operated his own business since then, though it is now “operating at a much slower pace,” allowing more time for writing poetry.

“Writing poetry is, for me, like it is for so many other poets, something I do out of a need to try to say something and hope that somewhere some of it will have some meaning.” says  Spur.  “I have published some of it.  An acceptance letter for publication is always a good feeling.......Rejection ain’t!” he jokes.

“We look forward to having Jim return to share his more recent poetry with us.” says Nancy McClellan, Performing Arts Studio Executive Director.  “Jim is sure to make it a delightful experience.  Everyone is invited.”
