An exhibition featuring artists of the 5 to 9 Group opens at the Norman Depot, 200 South Jones Avenue, during the Winterfest Art Walk, from 6:00 to 10:00 PM on Friday, December 1. The Depot will be festive, with music by Irv Wagner and the University of Oklahoma Faculty Brass Quintet from 6:00 to 6:45. The Norman Singers will perform at 8:30. Refreshments will be served and door prize registration will take place throughout the evening, as will the opportunity to meet the artists in the 5 to 9 Group.
The 5 to 9 Artists are a collective group of Norman artists whose name reflects the varying number of artists in the group over time. Current members include: Michelle Corona-Allen; Dixie Erickson; E. K. Jeong; Carolyn Faseler; Bill Munsell; Vicki Maenza; Timothy Sullivan; Corazon Watkins and Betty B. Wood.
This eclectic group, who joined together in 2000 to support and encourage each other, represents cultural and stylistic diversity, individual expression and the richness of choice. Each group member is an accomplished artist with a distinct style. The Group has shown together in a number of venues across Oklahoma this year, including Artspace in Ponca City and the Museum of the Great Plains in Lawton.
Faseler, Wood, Watkins and Maenza recently took part in a two week residency at the Julia and David White Artist Colony in Cuidad Colon, Costa Rica. Their work was shown in an exhibition followed the workshop.
Watkins recently won an award with her mixed-media painting, "Door 143," at the Centerfold national competition sponsored by the Leslie Powell Foundation and Gallery. She is also the organizer and curator of the International Vision Exhibitions which will be held in May 2007.
While at in Costa Rica, Faseler did abstract paintings using the local birds, flowers, and plants as source material. Back in Norman she decided to do a similar "Oklahoma Autumn Series," with local inspiration.
Maenza will show paintings, photo transfers and collage. Munsell will show paintings and mixed media works. Sullivan and Wood are printmakers and Wood also makes handmade books. Corona-Allen will show paintings and mixed media works. Erickson creates mixed media “art oddments” on fabric. Jeong works in mixed media and creates installations.
The 5 to 9 Group exhibition will remain in the Depot through January 28. Admission is free. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and Sunday, 1:00 to 5:00. The Depot will be closed, however, on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve as well as Christmas and New Year’s.
Performing Arts Studio Gallery exhibitions in the Depot are made possible in part by grants from the Norman Arts Council, the Oklahoma Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Arvest Bank is Corporate Sponsor.
